    • In earlier publications, e.g. 'The "modern" theory of natural law' in: A. Pagden (ed.), The Languages of Political Theory in Early-Modern Europe (Cambridge University Press, 1987), Tuck makes similar claims about the central role of self-interest in Grotius's theory.

    • A high level of accuracy cannot be taken for granted. To mention just one example among many: in Tuck's Natural Rights Theories p. 53, note 50, mercenarium habere ius locandi operas suas is translated 'a merchant has the ius to sell his wares'. Now, mercenarius means (wage-) labourer, and operas means labours. As Lady Bracknell might have put it, an error like this may be regarded as unfortunate, but to let it remain reprinted six times over two decades looks like carelessness.
