See Serge Tcherkézoff, 'A long and unfortunate voyage towards the invention of the Melanesia/Polynesia distinction 1595-1832', this issue, for earlier use of the terms 'Polynesia' and 'Micronesia'. The invention of 'Malaysia' is credited by Dumont d'Urville to 'Mr Lesson', most likely either Réné-Primavère Lesson, a pharmacist and natural historian who joined the Coquille expedition in 1821, or his brother Pierre-Adolphe Lesson who was the doctor on the 1826-29 Astrolabe and Zélée expedition
