    • Concerning the material aspects of this exhibition, we know only what is revealed in the contract of the builder charged with its construction (Bibliothèque nationale de France, Département des estampes, Documents réunis par Etienne Moreau-Nélaton et Georges Riat [Papiers Courbet], boîte 1). Once the construction of the building was completed, we know almost nothing of the way the artist used it. He never showed a particular interest in the way his paintings were installed.
