    • R. G. Collingwood, The Idea of History (New York, 1946). The work of Collingwood incorporating ideas from Vico, Kant, Hegel, and Croce was a major achievement in the intellectual effort to find a philosophical grounding for history. His work is of critical importance to all historical disciplines seeking to understand human activity in the world including history itself. Yet many historians and historical geographers seem to think that their professional work is independent of philosophy and they have largely abandoned the philosophy of history to philosophers. The idea that one can know the past is not a self-evident truth, and historical study demands a philosophical foundation if it is to produce a coherent, understandable, and accurate account of the past. The incoherence and lack of common problems of much of the work of historians and historical geographers bears testimony to its inadequate philosophical basis. In using the term "historical understanding" I set out an ideal of what such understanding should be, not as an empirical comment on what historians and historical geographers actually do.
