    • It is perhaps worth noting that Adam Smith makes a similar argument in his Theory of Moral Sentiments, but Smith thinks that the effects are good because the desire for esteem rouses men "out of the sloth which is their natural condition."     • In another place I have developed a treatment of "self-esteem" using an approach involving the conceptual and analytic apparatus developed for social esteem. I consider that approach "interesting," though for reasons that are obvious enough and are explored in that other paper, such self-evaluations are not necessarily to be taken as authoritative.
