    • Although Bankimchandra's project is essentially modern I do not think it would be farfetched to look for attempts in pre-modern Indian religious tradition at similar kinds of integration of ontology and ethics. For instance, according to classical Indian systems of anthropology and soteriology which follow the Sāmkhya ontology the essential characeristic of a human being is the radical separation of the soul (purusa, ātman) and the physical body which belongs to the natural world prakrti, Because this separation is a fact, it should be realized. The realization is salvation. In other words, inherent in the nature of a human being is a norm for action
