I have described a caring mode as one in which the carer attends to the needs and desires of the cared-for and responds as positively as possible given the circumstances and the relatively stable constellation of beliefs, attitudes, and desires that have been established on the foundation of a persistent desire to care for (promote the well-being of) those encountered. See Nel Noddings, Caring (Berkeley: University of California Press, 1984);

Empirical evidence for this claim is not hard to find. For example, in a study by Samuel and Pearl Oliner, non-Jewish rescuers of Jews during the Holocaust were reported as motivated by empathy in 37 percent of the cases, by principle (or belief) in only 11 percent. More (52%) were motivated by community norms - norms that were seen to apply to "people like us."The moral goodness of this last motive is, of course, entirely dependent on the goodness of the community. Normocentricity can press for either good or evil. See also Herbert C. Kelman and V. Lee Hamilton, Crimes of Obedience (New Haven, Conn.: Yale University Press, 1989);
