Meena Alexander, born in 1951 in India (where she already moved around a lot), first went to the Sudan with her parents, studied in England (Nottingham), and currently lives in New York. Her central questions are: "How should I spell out these fragments of a broken geography? .. . What could I ever be as a mass of fault lines, a fault mass? .. . That's all I am, a woman cracked by multiple migrations", Meena Alexander, Fault Lines: A Memoir by Meena Alexander, New York: New Feminist Press/City University of New York, 1993, pp. 2-3

When asked about the literary influences on her creative writing process, Sujata Bhatt always mentions the Jewish-American poet Eleanor Wilner, a professor at Goucher College, Maryland and her academic supervisor there (interviews on 17 December 1992 and 16 January 1997). The introductory quotation by Eleanor Wilner reminds one strongly of the Jewish idea of "being in the world". "So long as Jews were real Jews, only the body was in exile, not the soul. But when the Jews cast off their spiritual yoke, the body became emancipated and the soul went into exile. Oh, was that an exile - a bitter exile!", Isaac Bashevis Singer, The Penitent, Harmondsworth: Penguin, 1983, p. 8
