Dan Dennett ridicules fatalism as the "mystical and superstitious" thesis that "no agent can do anything about anything" (123), whose only virtue is "the power to create creepy effects in literature" (104), in Daniel Dennett, Elbow Room (Cambridge: MIT Press, 1984).

Aristotle's Sea Battle
-
Oxford: Oxford Univ. Press, and Mark Bernstein, Fatalism
-
The locus classicus here is Aristotle's famous example of the sea battle tomorrow in his Metaphysics. There the question becomes, If it is true that there will be a sea battle tomorrow, must it not already be the case that there will be a sea battle tomorrow? For an extended treatment of these concerns, first in Aristotle then in contemporary metaphysics, see Sarah Broadie, "Aristotle's Sea Battle," in Broadie, Passage and Possibility: A Study of Aristotle's Modal Concepts (Oxford: Oxford Univ. Press, 1982), and Mark Bernstein, Fatalism.
