Berlin Chronicle
-
ed. Peter Demetz., trans. Edmund Jephcott (New York: Harcourt, Brace, Jovanovich)
-
The name "Stieglitz" means goldfinch and has a particular resonance in a Benjaminian context. Carol Jacobs comments at length on Benjamin's word play with the proper name of Steglitz Street and the "Stieglitz" or goldfinch in Berlin Childhood. While Alfred Stieglitz chafed at the bonds of domesticity, Benjamin's aunt was perfectly content to view the world from the perch of her cage, holding the entire street in her thrall from her window, like a goldfinch in its cage, whose captivity endows upon it an unexpected and compelling eloquence.
