My reading of Liu Xiaobo and Chinese politics identifies the normative discourse of sovereignty and community as the significant "idiom in which the litigation is regulated." "The field of reference" for this discourse would thus be the facts that supposedly constitute its objective autonomy: language, birth, and soil. I rely on a theonzation of the limits of these objects in order to arrive at a sense of justice. See Jean-François Lyotard, The Differend: Phrases in Dispute, trans. Georges Van Den Abbeele (Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 1988), 9.

One important place to look for evidence in this regard is the postface to Liu Xiaobo, Zhongguo dangdai zhengzhi yu zhongguo zhishi fenzi (Taipei: Tonsan, 1990), where Liu lists five kinds of attitudes typical of Westerners' involvement with China. Another important place to look is Liu's essay "Foreign Salons and Cultural Imperialism" ["Yangshalong yu wenhua qmlue"] in Beiju shenmei ziyou, 47-55.

Regrettably, the author is forced by the constraints of space to employ words like a mantra. Hence a brief bibliography for the reader: For a brief sketch of nonsovereignty, see Jon Solomon, "No-soberanía para las multitudes: Recursos para una Dernocracia de Extranjeros, a partir de François Lamelle" [Non-sovereignty for the multitudes: Resources for a Democracy of Foreigners from François Laruelle's 'Non-philosophy'], " trans.
