Thing Theory
-
In other words, in the process of the Orient becoming a commodity fetish, there is the potential for critical disruptions as the object becomes more a thing, less determined, more negotiated. "Thing theory," which is not concerned with whether an object is Oriental, Western, or modern, is a philosophical enterprise that investigates what lies beyond the subject-object dialectic, to examine the ways in which things don't always cite their objecthood properly; they exceed their materiality or use value, and they wield a symbolic, meditative, or erotic potency that helps account for our desire for things, a desire that is not quite addressed by the exchange value that Marx ultimately finds alienating and dehumanizing. See Bill Brown, "Thing Theory," Critical Inquiry 28.1 (2001): 1-16
