41. Equiano's assertion about refusing to answer to the name Gustavus Vassa presents one of the many important complexities in relationship to Carretta's research into his nativity. Carretta has shown that Equiano's birth name in fact may have been Vassa and that he may have adopted Equiano only around the time of publishing the Interesting Narrative.
