Although the separation between subject and object is a distinct feature of modernity, traceable to the operations of the Cartesian cogito, what modernity does above all is to introduce representation as the focus of a knowing subject. Like Adorno and Horkheimer, Jameson does not consider capitalism as an ideology permeating the relation between subject and object, or as introducing a new form of consciousness. Capitalist ideology, rather, is inherent in the epistemological presumptions that structures an object in relation to a subject. See Fredric Jameson, A Singular Modernity (London: Verso, 2002), 52-3.
