    • at 14. For example, previously unviable sources of oil and gas are becoming attractive due to the higher price of energy, and the fact they are in secure locations. Many of these sources, such as the tar sands in Alberta, Canada are not only economically expensive to exploit but also environmentally costly. Oil production in the tar sands requires substantial amounts of natural gas and water, and there are also biodiversity issues related to these sources as well as social considerations relating to health and safety and impacts on the local community.
