Several physical reasons are offered in the literature for surface layering. The one prevailing nowadays is that it is a general phenomenon for all materials having a wide liquid stability range, that is, a large difference between the melting and boiling temperatures. This happens for metals but not, e.g., for Lennard-Jones systems.
