    • Cooperative DNA binding by CI repressor is dispensable in a phage λ variant
    • The authors show that genetically disrupting λCI cooperativity in the context of an otherwise wild-type phage prevents the formation of stable lysogens. They then demonstrate that compensatory mutations can be introduced into this phage that restore qualitatively wild-type behavior (both stable lysogeny and inducibility) without restoring λCI cooperativity.

    • Crystal structure of the λ repressor and a model for pairwise cooperative operator binding
    • The crystal structure of a DNA-bound λCI dimer, the first structure of full-length λCI, reveals an unexpected asymmetry, with one subunit in an extended conformation and the other in a compact conformation. This asymmetry provides an explanation for the rules governing higher-order complex formation by DNA-bound λCI dimers.
