Detail is intended denote a target of contiguous image data that human visual system may recognize as an object. In a medical image, this perceived object may be associated with a real object such as a tumor. This presentation is concerned with the detection of details, because detail does not seem to be used to make this distinction this presentation will use the more general term, target, instead. Some results and observations in this may not generalize to the detection of targets that are not compact.

The area of the disk can not be calculated from its specified diameter because its profile is discretely sampled and was blurred slightly to avoid aliasing. The following formula was used to calculate the effective area of the disk and Gaussian targets. Ae ≡ (Σwi) 2/Σwi2, where wi is signal increment by the target at the ith pixel. Ae is an effective number pixels of the target. K. M. Hanson, Detectability in computed tomographic images, Med. Phys. 6;441-451, 1979
