    • Evolution of eyes and photoreceptor cell types
    • This synthesis paper uses morphological and molecular data to create phylogenetic hypotheses for photoreceptor cell types. On the basis of this, Arendt proposes that retinal ganglion cells are sister cells to their interneurons, the horizontal and amacrine cell types, and these evolved from an ancestral rhabdomeric cell type. He emphasizes the importance of studying evolution at the cell-type level and provides a structure for doing so, incorporating gene trees and gene-expression data.

    • The functional genome of CA1 and CA3 neurons under native conditions and in response to ischemia
    • Global gene-expression difference in two neuronal subtypes was examined via array hybridization under both native and ischemic (restriction in blood supply) conditions. 1035 genes were differentially expressed in native conditions demonstrating that significant array differences are obvious in neuronal subtypes even from the same tissue. Genes with high levels of expression difference often represent new possible research avenues, as the functions of these genes were not previously characterized, functionally, in CA1 and CA3 cells.
