    • A keen eyewitness to the birth of the book business in Lexington was William A. Leavy, whose father moved the family's mercantile business to Lexington from Philadelphia in the 1780s. JOHN D. WRIGHT, LEXINGTON: HEART OF THE BLUEGRASS 22 (1994). Leavy, a wealthy merchant in his own right, wrote a private memoir that was much later published in several parts in the Register of the Kentucky Historical Society. It vividly captures the commercial life of the young state and pays particular attention to the establishment of the book trade and its ties to Philadelphia.

    • The Old Court-New Court crisis was an early nineteenth-century controversy in Kentucky in which the state legislature abolished the existing appellate court and replaced it with a new appellate court. In a populist reaction to a decision that struck down an act relieving debtors, in late 1824 the legislature abolished the soon to be called old court and, with the assistance of Governor Joseph Desha, created a sympathetic new court which promptly validated the relief act. For a while there were two sitting courts in Kentucky claiming to be the legitimate high court of the commonwealth. However, the 1826 elections swept the New Court forces out of power, and the legislature restored the Old Court and invalidated the decisions of the pretender court. The leading monograph on this colorful episode in Kentucky court history is ARNDT M. STICKLES, THE CRITICAL COURT STRUGGLE IN KENTUCKY, 1819-1829 1929
    • The Old Court-New Court crisis was an early nineteenth-century controversy in Kentucky in which the state legislature abolished the existing appellate court and replaced it with a new appellate court. In a populist reaction to a decision that struck down an act relieving debtors, in late 1824 the legislature abolished the soon to be called "old" court and, with the assistance of Governor Joseph Desha, created a sympathetic "new" court which promptly validated the relief act. STICKLES, THE CRITICAL COURT STRUGGLE IN KENTUCKY, 1819-1829 (1929).
