Am J Ophthalmol 2008; 146:589-594. The authors studied 15 eyes undergoing simultaneous cataract extraction and fluocinolone acetonide implant. No complications occurred during surgery. Visual acuity was markedly improved in most patients. Only a single patient had a uveitis flare within the first year of implantation. Fifteen percent of patients required glaucoma filtration surgery. The authors conclude this combined procedure may be beneficial in some patients with uveitis and cataract.

•• Elgohary MA, McCluskey PJ, Towler HMA, et al Outcome of phacoemulsification in patients with uveitis. Br J Ophthalmol 2007; 91:916-921. A retrospective analysis of 101 uveitic eyes undergoing cataract surgery. Cumulative probability of doubling of the visual angle was 52% over a 6-year follow-up. Posterior capsule opacification was found to be more likely in younger patients and those with hydrogel (as opposed to silicone) lenses. Major causes of vision loss were optic nerve dysfunction and macular edema.
