    • In an earlier Organizational Dynamics article (Charles C. Snow, Raymond E. Miles, and Henry J. Coleman, Jr., “Managing 21st Century Network Organizations,” Winter 1992), we identified the major types of network organizations and discussed the new role demands they placed on managers. At the same time, we described how networks could fail if managers did not perform their roles properly (Raymond E. Miles and Charles C. Snow, “Causes of Failure in Network Organizations,” California Management Review, Summer 1992). Now, with the appearance of the spherical structure in some leading-edge network companies, it is important to describe the managerial philosophy that energizes this newest type of network. The forces leading to the emergence of the spherical organization and to the human investment philosophy are discussed fully in Raymond E. Miles and Charles C. Snow, Fit, Failure, and the Hall of Fame: How Companies Succeed or Fail, Free Press, 1994.
