This is an insightful and brief commentary on the link between early adverse events, such as maltreatment and neglect for children in foster care, and long-term mental health outcomes.

This study was conducted in Australia and includes a sample of 326 children in family-based foster care, examining functioning in several domains in comparison with a control group.

This is an important study that has limitation in study design, but studies relevant to physical and mental health outcomes enhance our understanding of long-term implications of placement in foster care.

A longitudinal study that examines risk factors for foster care placement among children who experienced inpatient psychiatric hospitalization. This study found that 26.5% of children in the sample were placed in foster care within 4 years of the inpatient psychiatric hospitalization, suggesting that inpatient treatment, especially for children who have externalizing disorders, is a notable risk factor for future foster care placement.

27. Chamberlain P, Price J, Leve L, et al. Prevention of behavior problems for children in foster care: outcomes and mediation effects. Prev Sci 2008; 9:17-27. This is an important study that is related to Price et al.'s article, and discusses the link between an intensive foster parent training program and short-term behavior gains for children in foster care. This is of particular relevance to those focusing on mental health and psychology, and has less direct impact on general pediatric practice of children in foster care.
28. Price JM, Chamberlain P, Landsverk J, et al. Effects of a foster parent training intervention on placement changes of children in foster care. Child Maltreat 2008; 13:64-75. This is a well written study that addresses limitations of its data (i.e. it does not determine long-term effects in this study) and discusses relevant policy implications. It argues for integration of evidence-based foster parent training into regular foster parent training. The message that foster parent competency impacts behavioral problems for children is worth noting.
29. Taussig HN, Culhane SE, Hettleman D. Fostering healthy futures: an innovative preventive intervention for preadolescent youth in out-of-home care. Child Welfare 2007; 86:113-131. Describes a prevention intervention for preadolescent youth, aged 9-11 years, highlighting the need for mentors, and considers the difficulties of consent and assent for the child welfare population.

A comprehensive view of a specific behavioral intervention (Treatment Foster Care) by an outside reviewer that takes into context limitations of the studies.
