The authors reviewed the outcomes of 79 eyes in 70 patients who underwent IOFB removal during Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom. All patients underwent primary globe closure followed by delayed IOFB removal without any cases of endophthalmitis. Visual outcomes and proliferative vitreoretinopathy rates were similar to other previously published studies.

[Epub ahead of print] The authors report that 6 of 65 (9.2) of eyes reported better than 20/800 best-corrected visual acuity with 61% of secondary globe repairs developing proliferative vitreoretinopathy. The study found that entry and exit wounds anterior to the equator resulted in better anatomic outcomes.
