Severe eye injuries in the war in Iraq, 2003-2005

This study reports 797 severe eye injuries at a combat support hospital in Iraq. Of the 438 open-globe injuries, 116 eyes were enucleated, eviscerated, or exenterated. They also reported 265 eyelid injuries. The ocular injuries were most commonly caused by explosive blasts

The authors reviewed the outcomes of 79 eyes in 70 patients who underwent IOFB removal during Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom. All patients underwent primary globe closure followed by delayed IOFB removal without any cases of endophthalmitis. Visual outcomes and proliferative vitreoretinopathy rates were similar to other previously published studies.
