Het officiële relaas van de onlusten te Tjilegon en pogingen tot oproer in Midden - En Oost-Java

-
This is clear from the reading of Verslag omtrent den Post - en Telegraafdienst in Nederlandsch-Indië from that year on. One of the extremely rare but very visible exceptions were the so-called Tjilegon riots in the 1880s during which, according to an official report, "The house of the assistant-resident, and some other Europeans and most of the local native officials, were attacked, with several inhabitants of the houses being murdered while the houses' furniture was destroyed. The offices of the tax under-collector and of the salt depository were plundered; the telegraph wires to [the nearby town of] Serang were cut; and the prison was broken into." See "Het officiële relaas van de onlusten te Tjilegon en pogingen tot oproer in Midden- en Oost-Java," quoted in De Indische Gids, 11:2 (1889), 1768-69.

In the famous accident of 1920 it was rumored that a nationalist leader in central Javanese Surakarta, Tjipto Mangoenkoesoemo, was "ordered to blow up . . . the post office with dynamite . . . planning to cut off the electricity in the Sunan's palace on April 10, his birthday, and to kill him in darkness." This was the first occasion that the "police force . . . [was] brought into the palace." Beijering, "Overheidscensuur," esp. 53-59, gives some remarkable examples of Indies radio censorship. For instance, the program "Een midwinterdagdroom" (A Midwinter Dream) was banned in 1937 because the Indië Programma Commissie found it "nothing but a commercial for Switzerland." A lecture by Major W. G. Bas on the Dutch liberation struggle against the French in 1813 could not go on the air in 1936 because the commission thought that, besides being simplistic, it would possibly sound "tactless to the native listeners for whom independence had not yet come."

It means a growth of 7,144 a day or 300 new listeners each hour" (De Indische Luistergids [April 21, 1934], 3). In 1938, a Volksraad deputy demanded a "greater alertness" from the Indies authorities to the role of radio "in this modern society." Radio is a "medium of publicity and propaganda," the deputy said, "and it is effective with the masses." "Of course," the deputy added, "I do not want to sound like the German minister for propaganda, Dr. Göbbels." See Van Baalen's speech in Handelingen van den Volksraad (1938-39), 234.

Kartini's Image of the Javanese Landscape
-
"Later in 1925 when radio broadcasting was begun, kroncong melodies made even deeper inroads in Javanese society and were often combined with the melody of native Javanese music. Also in the process of Indonesia's fight for independence from Japan's military rule, kroncong became popular in songs inspiring a nationalistic spirit. Today the places where kroncong music is heard most often are Indonesian restaurants in Japan and the Netherlands." For information on Soetardjo, see, for instance, Heather Sutherland, The Making of a Bureaucratic Elite (Kuala Lumpur: Heinemann, 1979), esp. 82-85, 122-23. Another influential agent in the development of the Eastern Indies radio was R. A. A. Wiranatakoesoema, the regent of Bandung; also important throughout were the circles around the Mangkoenegaran princely palace in Surakarta.

Indies radio addressed the "real-life interests" of its listeners, with, for example, causeries on city planning, the origins of radio, and automobile repair. See, e.g., the March, April, and June through November issues of volume 4 (1938) of Berita-V.O.R.L.

Ibid., 103. Robert Musil wrote about the same thing, only perhaps more precisely: "Single-mindedness is the law of all waking thought and action, as much present in a compelling logical conclusion as in the mind of the blackmailer who enforces his will on the victim step by step, and it arises from the exigencies of life when only one singleminded control of circumstances can avert disaster. Metaphor, by contrast, is like the image that fuses several meanings in a dream." Robert Musil, The Man without Qualities (New York: Knopf, 1995), 647.
