2 (i.e., R=2.26 cm). This gives a value of βγθ=2.22 mrad. This value is somewhat larger that the value of 1.54 mrad in the example cited in the present article. However, because of its high current density, a single field emitter has very high brightness, in the sense given above. The mathematical definitions for the emittances in terms of the phase space distribution, and the processes that lead to emittance growth, are described in great detail in Reiser's recent book (Ref. 2).
