The Australian government announced extensive changes to this policy on 29 July 2008. Although the term 'mandatory detention' will still be used, individuals will now only be detained for initial health, identity, and security checks, or if they present an unacceptable risk to the community or have repeatedly refused to comply with visa conditions. The Christmas Island processing facility will still be used for certain unauthorized arrivals.
