Synthesis of 2-hydroxy-N-((pyridin-2-yl)methyl)benzamide (hpmba): Mixture of equal mole ratio of methyl-salicylate and methyl-pyridine refluxed in 10 mL of DMF for 8 h. The solvent was evaporated in vacuum and the crude product was purified by recrystallization in ethanol to give the white crystals.

2 = 0.1435 for all unique data. Absorption corrections were carried out utilizing SADABS routine (Bruker. SADABS, SMART and SAINT. Bruker AXS Inc., Madison, Wisconsin, USA, 20). All non-hydrogen atoms except for disordered solvent molecules were refined anisotropically with the hydrogen atoms were added to their geometrically ideal positions and refined isotropically. Disordered DMF and water molecules can be located from the difference Fourier maps. Structure solutions and refinements were performed with the SHELXL-97 package.
