5. The research question on the figure is too long to publish here. It offers advice to students on where to find the figure, and asks them to engage with the inherent meanings, contexts, and formal treatments
6. In 1994, in an attempt to inform this work I began a small scale piece of research. I wrote to 40 important artists, enquiring into their use, or non-use of sketchbooks. Of the twenty one artists who replied enthusiastically and wanting to help, only two provided the fullness of information I required: Anthony Green and Stephen Farthing, both of whom I had spoken to personally (explaining the project) before writing to them. This suggested that the research needed a more personal methodology to gather the data and material. I applied for funding to interview artists, sadly the three research funding organisations approached refused to support the research
