Here the idea of public education or of public schooling is to be understood as it is in the United States. Public schools are government operated common schools.

I think it is likely that Gutmann and Callan would agree with this. If I have a quarrel with them, it is that the need to strike a balance is not always apparent in their argument.

note
-
Rawls (p. 19) characterizes the two moral powers as a capacity for a sense of justice and a capacity for a conception of the good together with the capacities for judgment, thought and inference connected with the exercise of these powers.

note

Here I use 'reasonable' roughly as Rawls does. A doctrine is reasonable when it enables its adherents to respect one another as free and equal citizens and to respect reciprocity. I will use the term 'coherent' to refer to those features of comprehensive doctrines that render them plausible (minimally worthy of belief) and functional in people's lives.

Thus, for me, the notion of a vision of a good life is closer to Rawls's notion of an individual's rational life plan. See Rawls, John, A Theory of Justice. Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press. 1971. 1 do not believe that there is a disagreement here, only that my vocabulary is clearer for my purposes.
