The marked and persistent decrease in nodule volume induced by laser ablation was confirmed. Changes in thyroid hormone levels were transient and only rare cases presented the appearance of serum anti-thyroglobulin antibodies.

Thyroid 2007; 17:229-236. A second prospective randomized study on laser ablation treatment of cold thyroid nodules. The study confirms the clinical efficacy of ultrasonography-guided laser ablation in inducing a long (12-month) and persistent reduction in nodule volume and local pressure symptoms. The study evaluates a third group of patients, assigned to levothyroxine therapy, and demonstrates the lack of effectiveness of TSH-suppressive treatment for inducing volume reduction in large thyroid nodules causing local discomfort.

A massive ablation of tumor tissue is reported with only minor side effects. Treatment was followed by a significant improvement in performance status, local symptoms and hormonal levels.
