    • At this point, four images were presented to illustrate the role of the imagination in knowledge and belief. The first was taken from a recent political party manifesto showing primary school children raising their hands in a typical classroom situation. The second depicted a 3-4 year old dressed in the uniform of the Hitler Youth also raising one arm [Rees, L. The Nazis: A Warning from History. British Broadcasting Corporation 1997.]

    • The question posed was whether one might accurately differentiate these images on the criteria of Education or Schooling and on what basis one might know? The third image was of a fossil and posed the question; is this a prediction of things to come or a remnant of creatures long dead? Reference was made to Hegel's Philosophy of Nature which provided the former interpretation and Darwin's Theory of Evolution which informed the latter. Both interpretations are theory and imagination dependant [Drury M. O'C. The Danger of Words. Routledge and Kegan Paul. 1973]. The fourth image was a mathematical formula recently used to process data in a published research report to support the conclusion that the performance of secondary pupils in one region of Germany surpassed that of comparable pupils in selected secondary schools in England. The formula invited the view that values can be measured on the assumption that empirical data processing can yield imagination independent outcomes
