    • note
    • We repeatedly make use of the terms "magnetic materials" and "magnetic properties" which are in fact misnomers as we are simply referring to any perturbing medium which when placed in a if electromagnetic field, causes the magnetic induction B to change. A small conducting metallic body placed in a rf field, for example, will effectively displace B yet the metal need not, in a strict sense, exhibit magnetic properties.

    • We choose to work with pure (undiluted) liquids with well defined parameters ε and μ that do not have to be determined in separate experiments. A wider range of materials would be available if one is willing to measure these quantities for the particular mixture which is used.

    • note
    • 2 molecule exhibits numerous rotational-vibrational transition-sin the microwave region. In the case of liquid oxygen, these transitions are heavily broadened by collisions between molecules. To the best of our knowledge, measurements of the paramagnetic loss tangent of liquid oxygen have not previously been made.

    • The loss tangent tan δ=μ″/μ′ where μ′ and μ″ are, respectively, the dispersive and absorptive components of the permeability.
