    • In this paper only the form (40) of the pair wave function was considered. The more appropriate form (38) has been suggested to the authors by Dr. R. Morf (private communication).

    • After this work was completed, Dr. R. Morf pointed out to us that a large part of the size dependence of the energy per particle EN ( ν ) is due to the variation of the electron density ρN = N / 4 π R2 = N / 4 π S a02. Indeed the values of EN ( ν ) ( ρN / ρinf )-1/2 exhibit very small variations. [These values for N=5,6,7,^.^.^. 10 and ν = case 1 over case 3 are, respectively, -0.410^998, -0.410^950, -0.410^819, -0.410^737, -0.410^679, and -0.410^628. Notice that these values are increasing. This might indicate that -0.410^628 is a lower bound for E ( case 1 over case 3 ).] The extrapolated value of E ( ν ) for ν = case 1 over case 3 turns out to be -0.410, in agreement with Monte Carlo calculations (Ref. 41).
