Malima Wolf, Personal communication 2007 The given efficiency is for an adsorption system where cooled coal flue gases are combined with the lean amine solution, which binds to the carbon dioxide in the gases. The rich amine solution is then heated to strip out the carbon dioxide for capture. This upper bound on the efficiency compares the energy required to heat the rich amine solution to the theoretical work of separation, without considering energy used in auxiliary components of the process such as cooling the flue gases or compressing and/or liquefying the output carbon dioxide stream.
