A summary of the composition of the different samples is given below, where their weight percentage is estimated from the measurement of the saturating magnetization. For the study of the magnetotactic bacteria, TEM measurements are carried out using 5 μL of a solution containing 2 x 10 -4% by weight of magnetosomes deposited on top of a carbon grid, whereas SEM and magnetic measurements are carried out using 100 μL of a solution containing 4 × 10-4% by weight of magnetosomes deposited on top of a silicon wafer. For the study of the extracted magnetosomes, 5 μL of a solution containing 2 × 10-4% by weight of magnetosomes deposited on top of a carbon grid is used for the TEM measurements. For the magnetic and SEM measurements, a sample containing 20 μL of a solution with 2 × 10-3% by weight of magnetosomes deposited on a silicon wafer is used

The number of magnetosomes contained with in each chain has been estimated as 6. It is an average, which is deduced by counting the number of magnetosomes in 100 chains. The average distance between two chains, a ∼100 nm, has been estimated by measuring the distance between the centers of two adjacent chains in 100 chains. The of a typical chain of magnetosomes has been calculated, considering that the latter contains 6 magnetosomes with a mean size of 30 nm.
