R Pn is the real projective space. It is formed by taking the quotient of Rn+1 - {0} under the relation of equivalence x∼λx for all real numbers λ≠0 or, equivalently, by identifying antipodal points of the unit sphere Sn in Rn+1. R P2 was introduced in the context of liquid crystals (Ref.) (see also Refs.).

Overall our simulations show no obvious signature of a vortex unbinding transition. However, more conclusive arguments require the computation of more vortex-sensitive quantities, such as the spin stiffness (Ref.), or area versus perimeter scaling laws (Ref.), which are numerically very demanding.

In the Ising- R P3 model, domain walls separate regions with σ=+1 from those with σ=-1. Figure 10 shows that ferromagnetic configurations of the vectors are favored in the bulk of chirality domains. On the other hand, orthogonal configurations are favored on bonds that stand across domain walls. Hence the lowest-energy configuration for the vectors is to point in direction, say, [1,0,0,0] in the σ=+1 domain, and in some orthogonal direction, say [0,1,0,0] in the σ=-1 domain. An analog low-energy configuration in the discrete model of Eq. 18 is obtained by setting ti =1 in the bulk of both domains and tj =0 in the vicinity of the domain wall.

The Hamiltonian of the Blume-Capel model (Ref.) is H=-J i,j Si Sj +Δ i Si2, where Si denotes a spin 1 at site i, J is the ferromagnetic interaction, and Δ is the crystal field. The Blume-Capel model and the site-diluted spin model [Eq. 18] become equivalent once the -1 contribution is dropped in Eq. 18 and D (T) =Δ-Tln (2).
