J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg 2006;132:633-9. ▶ This is a retrospective review of the results of the ASO in 19 institutions across Europe. While the data from infants not undergoing surgery are not included, it does provide a valuable picture of current surgical and perioperative practice. Most other studies in the recent era have been from single institutions.

Circulation 2006;113:280-5. ▶ This report of cerebral MRI in infants before the ASO was the first to provide evidence that the atrial septosotomy may cause preoperative cerebral emboli.
