Niche-specific regulation of central metabolic pathways in a fungal pathogen
-
Using gene fusions between promoters for metabolic enzymes and the gene encoding green fluorescent protein, the authors demonstrate expression of both glycolytic and gluconeogenic genes in subpopulations of C. albicans cells recovered from murine infection. These results demonstrate that infecting cells are heterogeneous.

Self-regulation of Candida albicans population size during GI colonization
-
In this study, expression of several hypha -co-regulated genes is shown to be independent of Efg1p when C. albicans cells are colonzing the murine intestinal tract. In the laboratory, these genes require Efg1p for expression. Therefore, regulation of gene expression during growth within a host may differ from the regulation observed during laboratory growth.
