    • See ESI These OPV-Au particles were synthesized by a direct method yielding particles having an average diameter of 4.1 nm, see ref. 4a Further analysis was performed by adding iodine to desorb the ligands from the surface of the nanoparticles. For fully EO4 capped gold nanoparticles, this turned out to be unsuccessful, probably caused by the hydrophilic surroundings of the nanoparticle. In case of EO4/OPV3-Au nanoparticles, all the nanoparticles precipitated, indicating the formation of amphiphilic particles. The ratio of the particles could not be determined using this method, because of the selective removal of the ligands
