    • The Foundation Center's data may not fully capture the impact of the downturn in the economy on philanthropic giving over the past several years. This is because the payout of private foundations is based on a five-year rolling average, with some pre-downturn years still reflected in the average. Nonetheless, substantial resources continue to be devoted to health, and the relative priority placed on children has remained unchanged. More recent improvements in the stock market again point to the potential for increased funding for children in the years ahead.

    • The GIH database is a useful tool for funders to learn what their colleagues are doing. However, it cannot be used to analyze trends in giving because it does not systematically capture all of the work of those organizations funding in health or even all of the work of those organizations that define themselves primarily as health funders.

    • National Center for Health Statistics, Health, United States, 2003, Pub. no. 2003-1232 (Hyattsville, Md.: NCHS, 2003). Overweight and obesity are measured by body mass index (BMI), which takes into account both height and weight. For adults, a BMI of 25 is considered overweight; a BMI of 30 is considered obese. For children, a BMI above the ninety-fifth percentile for age and sex is considered overweight. Because the BMI for children is supposed to increase as they grow, there is no accepted definition of obesity that is distinct from overweight.
