Nor does Zuccarelli, a strong supporter of Corsica's adherence to France, see a Northern Ireland-style solution for the island. One must stop comparing the situation of Corsica to that of Ulster ⋯ the Corsican politician said. Our region is an integral part of [the French] Republic. That's the wish espoused by the immense majority of Corsicans.

Sarkozy warned that he would not allow an amnesty of prisoners convicted of killings. No, there is no way. Not today, nor tomorrow, he said. Some separatist factions have been seeking a general amnesty for all prisoners they consider have been detained for political crimes. They include in that the 1998 assassination of the island's governor, Claude Erignac.

According to Le Monde, the French government is considering increasing the maximum prison sentence against heads of extremist groups from 20 to 30 years, if such persons harbor the intention of killing. Those offering logistical support to radical groups may also face up to 20 years in prison, instead of the current 10 years. The draft legislation also aims to offer an arsenal of new judicial and policing tools, from video surveillance to tougher scrutiny of airline passengers likely to become a European-wide directive, Le Monde reported.
