    • Traumatic injuries were defined by the presence of an International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD9-CM) code for injury (800-904.9, 910-959.9) in any of up to 15 diagnoses on the discharge record. We excluded late effects of injury (ICD9-CM 905-909.9) and those with minor injuries as defined by an ISS of less than 9.
