Biol Psychol 2007; 75:37-44. In this longitudinal study of 93 metastatic breast cancer patients, a relationship is found between the clinical features of sleep disturbance and psychosocial factors (depression and stress) and pain. Disturbed sleep could be a specific clinical marker for these symptoms in the advanced cancer population. Group therapy intervention did not improve sleep problems but initially, it was not targeted for that. Still, this study might have important implications in a better understanding of several patterns of sleep disturbance.

In spite of a low rate of major depressive disorder (30/361 = 8.3%), the authors found that a cut-off of 14/15 gave a sensitivity of 0.87 (95% CI: 0.70-0.95) and a specificity of 0.85 (95% CI: 0.81-0.89) and recommend HADS as a good screening tool for major depressive disorders in oncology.
