'Al-Qaeda in Mesopotamia' and 'Anbar zSalvation Council' (ASC) are the terms used throughout this paper, though both groups are known by other names. Al-Qaeda in Mesopotamia is more officially 'The Organisation of al- Qaeda (the Base) in the Land of Two Rivers' and has overlapping and often interchangeable membership with the Mujahedin Shura Council, the Islamic State of Iraq, and Jamaat al-Tahwid Wa al-Jihad (Group for Monotheism and Holy War). The Anbar Salvation Council is also referred to as the 'Sahawa al-Anbar' (Anbar Awakening) or more recently 'Sahawa al-Iraq' (Iraq Awakening), often abbreviated SAA and SAI.
