A 5-year incidence study of DES in a specific rural area in Wisconsin over three 2-year periods found an incidence of 13.3% (95% CI 12.0-14.7%). Incidence was significantly associated with age (P < 0.001). After adjusting for age, incidence was greater in patients with a history of allergy or diabetes, who used antihistamines or diuretics, and with poorer self-rated health (P < 0.05).
