    • LbL films were fabricated using a custom modified automatic robotic system (R&K, Berlin, Germany). Carefully cleaned glass substrates were dipped into an aqueous solution of 0.5 wt % PDDA for 10 min, rinsed with water for 1 min, dried, dipped into an aqueous dispersion of CdTe NCs (0.01 M referred to Te) for 20 min, and subsequently rinsed in water for 1 min. One cycle resulted in a "bilayer" consisting of a polymer and a NC monolayer. The procedure was repeated to obtain a multilayer film of desirable thickness. The polymer layer, together with a ligand shell, contributes with ∼0.5 nm to the interparticle distance in vertical direction.
