    • This analysis is informed by field research in Madagascar between 1999 and 2005. During that time three separate research projects were carried out. Two of the projects were academic (Masters thesis and PhD dissertation) and the other was conducted for an international develooment firm on behalf of USAID. For each study informants included members of village communities from different regions of the island, public servants and public officials from all administrative levels, development and conservation professionals national and foreign, and employees of logging and mining companies, to name but the principal ones
