17. Recently the author noticed that a similar software "ImageJ" has been distributed by NIH: http://rsb.info.nih.gov/ij/ (accessed Jan 2008). This software can process all the steps from (1) to (7) without using any graphic software, This software can treat JPEG, TIFF, and many other formats and can even perform wavelength calibration.
