Detection and reproducibility of mental stress-induced myocardial ischemia with Tc-99m sestamibi SPECT in normal and coronary artery disease populations
-
Kim CK, Bartholomew BA, Mastin ST: Detection and reproducibility of mental stress-induced myocardial ischemia with Tc-99m sestamibi SPECT in normal and coronary artery disease populations. J Nucl Cardiol 2003, 10:56-62. This study evaluated the effect of mental stress on coronary artery disease patients versus normals. It found that CAD patient population has an 80% positive incidence of mental stress-induced ischemia. It also found that SPECT imaging is an effective tool to demonstrate mental stress-induced ischemia with a very good reproducibility on repeat testing.

-
Orth-Gomer K, Wamala SP, Horsten M: Marital stress worsens prognosis in women with coronary heart disease: The Stockholm Female Coronary Risk, Study. JAMA 2003, 284:3008-3014. In this study the influence of marital stress and work stress on the incidence of cardiovascular events was studied in a total of 292 consecutive female patients aged 30 to 65 who were hospitalized for acute myocardial infarction or unstable angina pectoris. The patients were observed for 4.8 years. The study found that, after adjusting to other confounding variables, marital stress was associated with a 2.9-fold (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.3-6.5) increase in cardiovascular events. The same association was not found with work stress (hazard ratio, 1.6; 95% CI, 0.8-3.3).

Effects of acute psychological stress on adhesion molecules, interleukins and sex hormones: Implications for coronary heart disease
-
Heinz A, Hermann D, Smolka MN, et al.: Effects of acute psychological stress on adhesion molecules, interleukins and sex hormones: implications for coronary heart disease. Psychopharmacology 2003, 165:111-117. Interleukins were measured in 18 physicians immediately before and after academic oral presentation, which is perceived as stress. This was found to elevate the interleukin levels following the stress exposure.
